Designing key features to make the most of the digital health landscape

Navigating the rapidly changing digital health landscape can be difficult. HealthXL is a dedicated digital health platform focused on pharmaceutical companies. It offers consulting services, community events, and virtual meetings to foster impactful collaboration between leading healthcare brands and cutting-edge technology companies in the digital health space.
As the only designer, I was responsible for managing the UX and UI design process. This involved user research, wireframing, prototyping, and iterative design improvements. I worked closely with the product manager and developers to ensure the integration of design solutions and improve the user experience.
Role:
UX UI Designer
2022-2024
HealthXL platform
Featured works:
Reducing time and effort to find content in one place
Description: Previously, platform members had to search individual pages for specific content, resulting in a fragmented and inefficient experience with high failure rates and low-quality results. A global search feature would allow users to quickly and accurately find relevant content across the entire platform.
Approach: The design process included user research (via Hotjar and user testing) and the creation of an intuitive, responsive interface with advanced search options and filters.
Achievements: Initially, the new search version saw strong adoption, but it declined due to some early issues. After resolving these, adoption increased again. Consequently, failed searches decreased by 60%, boosting trust and engagement in the platform.
Fostering a stronger sense of community
Description: HealthXL’s vision is to connect leaders to improve health, and we know that meaningful connections often happen at meetings. However, our meetings weren't hitting the monthly targets we had planned. Allowing members to invite others to upcoming meetings can be a powerful way to not only foster new connections but also, increase meeting subscriptions.
Approach: The design focused on the UI, displaying members' activities and their past and upcoming meeting history on the profile page, and creating a meeting invitation system to allow members to invite other members to meetings.
Achievements: Allowing members to send invitations to other members has increased engagement in our meetings.
Delivering relevant content to members
Description: The platform provides a range of content related to different areas of digital health, but not all content appeals to every member, leading to low engagement, retention, and interactions. By tailoring content to users’ specific interests, we can offer a more personalized experience, potentially boosting interaction and encouraging more frequent visits to the platform.
Approach: User research involved analyzing existing data from platform interactions, including meeting subscriptions, community memberships, articles read, and information gathered during the sign-up onboarding process. We also examined best practices for collecting behavioural data while ensuring privacy and benchmarked against successful examples from other platforms.
Achievements: As a result, we launched a minimum viable product (MVP) featuring meeting and content recommendations on key pages, such as the home feed, articles page, and meeting pages. We also incorporated user feedback at the end of each recommendation to evaluate its relevance. The algorithm has been continuously refined during this MVP phase to enhance the accuracy of the recommendations.
Saving over half a minute of users’ time in joining communities
Streamlining the process of joining a community by reducing the steps from 5 to 3, and adding immediate action prompts, like event and insights cards, to guide users on the next steps.
Controlling the content in the home feed
Enable admins to customize the home feed by pinning, deleting, and rearranging cards. This flexibility helps them optimize content placement for highlighting important, current events.
Voicing members’ opinions by adding a poll feature.
Polls were a great way to capture the HealthXL community's opinion on a topic, like a snapshot of what digital health thought leaders were thinking. And also an inspiration to fuel topics for new content and meetings.
Staying ahead with real-time updates
Notifying members when they are invited to a meeting when someone greets them or is tagged in a comment on the platform.
